What You Will Learn
Intermediate
- What a VPC is and why it matters
- Subnets, route tables, gateways
- How to create a basic VPC
VPC with public subnet (ALB, NAT) and private subnets (EC2 apps + RDS database)
A VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) is your own isolated network in AWS. You define IP ranges, subnets, and routing — just like a physical data center, but virtual.
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| VPC | Your isolated network (e.g., 10.0.0.0/16) |
| Subnet | A segment of the VPC (e.g., 10.0.1.0/24) |
| Internet Gateway | Connects VPC to the internet |
| Route Table | Defines where traffic goes |
| Security Group | Instance-level firewall |
Default VPC
AWS gives every account a default VPC with public subnets in every region. You can use it for learning, but create custom VPCs for production.Practical Exercise
Go to VPC in AWS Console
Examine the default VPC
Create a new custom VPC: 10.0.0.0/16
Create a public subnet: 10.0.1.0/24
Create a private subnet: 10.0.2.0/24
Key Takeaways
- VPC = your isolated network in AWS.
- Subnets divide the VPC into segments.
- Public subnets have internet access; private do not.
- Internet Gateway connects VPC to internet.
- Security Groups = instance-level firewall.
